In 1613, City Point was established by Sir Thomas Dale, which would be the beginning of the historic Hopewell. City Point came to hold a crucial role in the American Revolution, and with General Grant’s Siege of Petersburg during the Civil War. With proximity to the James and Appomattox Rivers, Hopewell is a trading powerhouse, as well as a haven for immigrants, slaves and the military labor force. Tobacco warehouses were the city’s main income in the 1700s. In the early 1900s, Hopewell began a lifetime of industrialism. It was expanded by DuPont, a dynamite factory, which switched to guncotton for the first World War. Many large processing plants have made homes in Hopewell, such as Honeywell, Hercules, and Evonik Industries.
