Richmond Cider

There's another craft beverage industry bubbling just under the surface in Richmond: mead and cider.

Local meaderies and cideries create unique beverages—made with honey and apples—that are becoming more and more popular every year. Fall is the perfect season to sip these unique, richly historic concoctions, and our real estate agents are excited to share some of their favorite spots for local cider and mead in Richmond!

  • Blue Bee Cider - 1320 Summit Ave, Richmond, VA 23230
Virginia's first urban cidery, Blue Bee Cider, has become a fixture of Richmond's historic Scott's Addition neighborhood, where they moved from their original location in the Aragon Coffee building in 2013. Blue Bee Cider offers an ever-expanding lineup of distinctive ciders, many of them crafted from single varietals of apple. You can sample a few in their spacious tasting room, just minutes away from many Richmond homes for sale. Cider flights are available, as well as cheese boards and snacks.

  • Funktastic Meads - 1212 Alverser Plaza, Midlothian, VA 23113
The process of making mead is an art going back thousands of years. Mead, as we know it today, is typically made in a very traditional way, but the folks at Funktastic Meads are known for pushing boundaries. In their Midlothian production facility and tasting room, they create meads that run the gamut from dry to semi-dry to sweet and from still to carbonated. Many are made with fruits, grains, spices, and hops in addition to the traditional honey and water. That all makes Funktastic Meads a great place to taste something special.

  • Bryant's Cider & Brewery - 2114 E Main St, Richmond, VA 23223
If you can't decide between craft beer and hard cider, head to Bryant's Cider & Brewery, where you can have both. Nestled behind a vintage 1850s storefront in the historic Shockoe Bottom neighborhood, Bryant's offers a great selection of handcrafted beers and ciders, all served in a beautiful, Victorian-themed tasting room. You can even try a flight of ciders to really experience the different varieties or try one of their signature cider cocktails.

  • Black Heath Meadery - 1313 Altamont Ave, Richmond, VA 23230
You can always count on tasting something bold and unique at Black Heath Meadery, where the world's oldest fermented beverages are made using modern techniques. At their cozy tasting room on Altamont Avenue, you can sample award-winning meads that are made with local Virginia honey and a wide range of fruits, bringing out bold or subtle notes of blueberry, apricot, tangerine, blackberry, and more. They also offer cans and bottles to go, and the back patio of their brick-and-mortar location is a great spot to sit and sip on a brisk fall day.

  • Buskey Cider - 2910 W Leigh St, Richmond, VA 23230
Located in a renovated warehouse in Scott's Addition, Buskey Cider has quickly made a name for itself as one of Richmond's best and boldest cideries. They have a spacious indoor taproom and outdoor "cider garden," where you can sample any of their many unique varieties of hard cider. The rotating taps offer a handful of old standbys like RVA Cider (made with 100% Virginia apples) as well as seasonal specialties like Pumpkin Pie Cider, made with pumpkin, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, clove, allspice, and chocolate. It doesn't get much more fall than that!
