Spring is back in Virginia, and that means one thing for thrill-seeking families: Kings Dominion is back too. Our state's biggest amusement park opened for the season on March 30, and its rides and interactive attractions just might be the most exciting things between Richmond and Washington, D.C. If your family is looking at Richmond homes for sale, head north to Doswell for a preview of the adventures you could have all summer long.
What makes Kings Dominion Amusement Park so much fun for Virginia families? Here are some of our favorite things to do while visiting this 400-acre playground:
- Ride a World-Class Roller Coaster
Ready to get your blood pumping? More than 60 rides are spread out across the park, but the main attraction is a collection of awe-inspiring roller coasters. Try all 12 coasters while you're there, including the aptly named Intimidator 305 (which takes you 305 feet into the air) and the Coney Island-inspired wooden beast The Grizzly. And don't miss the latest addition, Twisted Timbers! This mid-Atlantic first puts a steel track on traditional wooden supports, and it simulates the path of a mysterious 1950 disaster in Hanover Hill Orchard.
- Join the PEANUTS™ Gang at Planet Snoopy
Are some of your family members too small for the park's most extreme attractions? Planet Snoopy was made just for them. This 14-acre kids' area is based on Charlie Brown's world, with 20 family-friendly rides like the Great Pumpkin Coaster and the Kite-Eating Tree. Young drivers can even get behind the wheel themselves at several attractions, including the bumper car course Lucy's Crabbie Cabbies, the self-driving truck track Road Rally, and an enclosed expressway with its own traffic lights and signs.
- Take a Refreshing Plunge at Soak City
What would summer at a theme park be without water slides? Soak City is a sprawling water park right next door to the main amusement park, and it has 20 acres of refreshing, relaxing, and extreme aquatic attractions. Climb the 65-foot tower to slide down Hurricane Heights, take the young ones to kid-friendly Splash Island, or rent a poolside cabana for a day of pampering. Soak City has all the slides, rafting rides, wave pools, and lazy river bends you need to cool off as a family.
- Camp Out with the Kids at Camp Wilderness
Turn your theme park adventure into a whole weekend of fun at King Dominion's official campground. Whether you park your RV, pitch a tent, or rent a deluxe cabin for ten, you'll have access to a pool, playground discounted park tickets, and free shuttle service to and from the park. Camp Wilderness is a Kampgrounds of America site, which guarantees certain amenities and service standards, and it's a great way to immerse yourself fully in the Kings Dominion experience.
- Sample Local Cuisine at Taste of Virginia
One of the state's newest food festivals is giving Chicago a run for its money. Taste of Virginia takes over Kings Dominion for several weekends each May, bringing homegrown food, drinks, and music to the park. Grab a Tasting Card and choose six different dishes inspired by regions in Virginia (for example, Chesapeake Bay crab mac and cheese, or Blue Ridge Mountains apple bread pudding). Or opt for the Wine Tasting Card, and sample six different Virginia vineyards and wineries.
