- Pocahontas State Park — 10301 State Park Rd., Chesterfield, VA 23823
Pocahontas State Park has no shortage of trails for you to explore. More than 64 miles are yours to travel across in this sprawling state park. Although it may be a little too cold to swim in their pools, you can relax after your walk by fishing one of three lakes. If the skies get a little cloudy, feel free to visit the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum on site.
- Forest Hill Park — 4021 Forest Hill Ave., Richmond, VA 23225
Forest Hill Park is an excellent place for National Take A Hike Day or anytime you want some fresh air. Listed in the state's Historic Register, this space was once an estate and amusement park before becoming one of Richmond's best places for outdoor relaxation. Bring a pair of binoculars while you walk through the wetlands so you can get a closer look at the diverse wildlife that call that park home.
- Maymont Nature & Visitor Center — 2201 Shields Lake Dr., Richmond, VA 23220
The Maymont Nature & Visitor Center offers up its 100-acre estate for families to enjoy. Although the grounds and gardens close in mid-October, you can still visit the Maymont farm and wildlife habitats on National Take A Hike Day. Keep an eye out for animals of every variety including eagles, bobcats, black bears, goats, bison, and whitetail deer.
- Powhatan State Park — 4616 Powhatan State Park Rd., Powhatan, VA 23139
Follow the historic James River, and it'll lead you to Powhatan State Park. While this natural area offers the opportunity for a fantastic day on the water, there are also plenty of multi-use trails for you to trek through. Bring the family along to enjoy a picnic at the playground. National Take a Hike Day is a great time to visit a few Powhatan homes for sale and acquaint yourself with one of the most popular area parks.
- Historic Site Loop — 5001 Siege Rd., Prince George, VA 23875
The Historic Site Loop in Petersburg National Battlefield was named for the events that took place in the forest. The Siege of Petersburg was the longest military event in the Civil War.
